Vaccines at 2 months: DPT-HB-Hib 1 & Oral Polio 2 (bOPV 2)
At 2 months your baby starts the most important vaccine series of early childhood: DPT-HB-Hib 1 (one shot against five diseases) and Oral Polio 2. This is the first of three consecutive visits at 2, 3, and 4 months.

Vaccines given at 2 months
-
DPT-HB-Hib 1
- Protects against
- Five diseases in one shot: diphtheria, whooping cough (pertussis), tetanus, hepatitis B, and Haemophilus influenzae type b, a leading cause of pneumonia and meningitis in toddlers.
- How it is given
- Injection into the thigh (intramuscular).
- Side effects
- Fever, fussiness, and a painful swollen spot at the injection site for 1–2 days. These tend to be more noticeable with the 2nd and 3rd doses.
- Availability
- Free at posyandu and puskesmas; also available from pediatric (IDAI) clinics, usually as a combined DPT-HB-Hib-IPV vaccine.
-
Oral Polio 2 (bOPV 2)
- Protects against
- Poliomyelitis (polio). The second dose reinforces the first.
- How it is given
- Drops given directly into the mouth (oral).
- Side effects
- Almost no side effects.
- Availability
- Free at posyandu and puskesmas.
- Note
- At least 4 weeks (28 days) after Oral Polio 1.
Why it matters at this age
Diphtheria and whooping cough can cause severe complications and even death in infants, while Hib is a leading cause of toddler pneumonia and meningitis. A three-dose series is needed because a young infant's immune system cannot build full protection from a single dose.
What to bring to posyandu
Bring the KIA book, dress your baby in clothes that open easily at the thigh, and allow 15–30 minutes of observation after the shot. A fed and well-rested baby handles the visit more calmly.
Frequently asked questions
My baby has a fever after DPT-HB-Hib. What should I do?
A mild fever for 1–2 days is a normal reaction and a sign the body is building antibodies. Give paracetamol at the labeled or nurse-advised dose, use a warm compress on the injection site, and nurse frequently. If a high fever lasts beyond 2 days, your baby seems unusually limp, or cries inconsolably, see a doctor promptly.
What does DPT-HB-Hib mean?
It is a five-in-one combination vaccine: D (diphtheria), P (pertussis/whooping cough), T (tetanus), HB (hepatitis B), and Hib (Haemophilus influenzae type b). Combining them cuts the number of shots. One jab for five protections.
We missed the 2-month visit. Do we start over?
No need to start over. Just resume as soon as you remember. The series is delayed, not void. DPT-HB-Hib doses need at least 4 weeks between them. If several doses were missed, puskesmas staff or your pediatrician will draw up a catch-up schedule.
Never miss a dose. Track it and get reminders
