Safe sleep lowers the risk of sudden infant death syndrome (SIDS). Most guidelines recommend the same practices for the first year.

  • Place baby on their back, for every sleep, until they roll over themselves.
  • Flat, firm surface — no pillows, thick blankets, or soft toys in the bed.
  • Sleep in the same room as parents, on a separate surface, ideally for the first 6 months.
  • Keep the room a comfortable temperature; don’t over-dress (overheating risk).

Back-sleeping is the single most important safe-sleep practice.

If you choose bed-sharing, talk with your health provider about lower-risk ways. Avoid sharing a sleep surface on a sofa or after smoking, alcohol, or extreme fatigue — these raise risk significantly.
