Baby-led weaning (BLW) lets a ~6-month-old explore food with their own hands. Babies learn to chew, self-regulate portions, and join family meals earlier.

Starting safely

  • Wait for readiness (~6 months): sitting with little support, steady head, bringing food to the mouth.
  • Cut into graspable sticks (your finger’s size); soft enough to smash between your fingers.
  • Examples: avocado, banana, steamed broccoli, boiled carrot, thin omelette strips.
  • Always supervise during meals; never leave the baby alone.

Choking vs gagging

Gagging is a normal reflex pushing food too far back forward again — light coughing, red face, still breathing. Choking is silent, blue face, unable to breathe. Avoid hard/round foods (whole nuts, whole grapes, sausage coins) that pose choking risk.

BLW suits many families but isn’t the only way. Some blend purees and finger foods — choose what fits your family. Check with your pediatrician about allergy or growth concerns.
