Good discipline teaches; it doesn’t hurt. The goal is helping a child learn self-regulation over time — not obedience from fear.

Core principles

  • State limits calmly and briefly — no long lectures.
  • Acknowledge the feeling first, then hold the line: ‘I see you’re angry. But we don’t hit.’
  • Use logical consequences: if a toy is thrown, the toy takes a short rest.
  • Offer limited choices to give agency (‘red shirt or blue?’).
  • Stay consistent across caregivers — shifting limits confuse.

Physical punishment and yelling aren’t recommended; evidence shows they’re less effective and can harm the relationship.

Every child differs and every family has its own values. No single method is right for all. What’s consistent across research: warmth plus predictable limits grows more self-regulated children.
