Bath time can be one of the most relaxing moments of the day, but water is the only environment where accidents can happen in seconds. A few fixed habits remove nearly all the risk.
Non-negotiable rules
- Never leave a baby or toddler alone in the bath, even for a moment, even with a bath seat. Drowning is silent and quick.
- Prepare everything first: towel, clean diaper, clothes within reach, before the water runs.
- Check the temperature with your elbow; it should feel comfortably warm, not hot.
- Run cold first, then hot, and never add hot water while baby is in the tub.
Never leave a child alone in the bath, even for 30 seconds to grab a towel.
As they grow
- Babies under 6 months need only a few inches of water; a newborn can be bathed with just a warm sponge or cloth.
- Once your toddler can stand and climb, the risk shifts: secure them with one hand, keep the bathroom door latched, and empty the tub right after.
- Keep all toiletries and cleaning products out of reach and stored high.
With the same safe setup every time, bath time stays a calm, joyful part of the day.
